How do I review an earthquake latch until I’ve seen it in action? The design makes sense, the components are well made and it was fairly easy to install. About the only thing I’d add to the instructions would be to carefully predrill 1/16″ holes to make your life easier with hardwood cabinet doors.Beyond that it’s about piece of mind. Some people are fatalistic and do nothing. In the event of an earthquake, I hope to open the undamaged contents of my liquor cabinet, pour myself a drink into an undamaged glass, and toast my foresight in installing these latches. At about $5 and 10 minutes per latch, it is well worth the hassle compared to replacing few hundred dollars of stemware, dinnerware and spirits.

  2. Earthquake safety latch innovation, September 10, 2011

This review is from: Safe-T-Proof SeismoLatch Automatic Earthquake Cabinet Door Latch – Silver (10-Pack)

I am a veteran of the 1994 Northridge quake. I had been looking for a quake latch system that does not require two hands to open a cabinet door. There are some push latches which require a short push and then a pull to open. I’m not sure how well they would stand up to quake forces to keep the cabinet door closed. ETC has apparently come up with a new approach to earthquake safety latches for cabinets – they are “automatic.” You install a cabinet mounted swinging hook and a door mounted latch and then place the hook upright. In an earthquake, the hook swings forward engaging the latch. Both components are well secured to the cabinet and door and have room to move around so I feel confident that the system will keep the door closed in the series of strong motions and jolts seen in a quake. After installation, the cabinet door works just like it did before. One hand opening with no push required. As icing on the cake, ETC has designed an installation system which makes alignment very easy. The two pieces have adhesive on them and you just push the hook holder into place on the cabinet where you want it. Then put a foam template/marker on the holder and shut the door. The template transfers to the door and you push the latch into position right under it. Then remove the template and attach each piece with two screws. Finally set the hook in the upright position. You are done until there is a quake. Then open with a finger between the door and the cabinet frame and reset the mechanism. I am not easily given to enthusiasm for new products, but in my view, this design is quite ingenious and a real solution to a tough problem – preserving normal door operation until a latch is needed.
